On October 8, 2005 a massive earthquake occurred at 8:50:38 a.m. Pakistan Standard Time. It registered 7.6 on the Richter Scale making it a major earthquake. Initially, official Pakistani estimates were that the earthquake has killed over 30,000 people and injured over 42,000.

However, as most of the affected areas are in mountainous regions and have been rendered inaccessible by landslides that have blocked the roads, the death toll is thought to be much higher.


As of filling of the report the death toll is proceeding upwards of 30,000 lives. The most severely affected areas were Balakot, Garhi Habibullah, Rawalkot and Muzaffarabad.

One of the two residential towers in Islamabad ( Margalla Towers in F-10 sector), believed to contain up to 60 apartments each, collapsed in the quake. Pakistani government officials at the site stated the number of people affected by the collapse was in the hundreds, many of whom are feared dead. Efforts by rescue workers are ongoing. Over 52 people are rescued from the collapsed residential " Marghalla Towers ". And on the third day a two year old child was recovered by the Italian rescue team after she had been buried for more then 60 hours under the rubble.
